It’s nearing the end of 2009, and we’re hearing the seasonal buzzwords… “New Year’s Resolutions!” What I am sure started out as a concept with the best of intentions, the life span of the typical modern day New Years Resolution is about 24 hours. In the most impressive, best-case-scenario, hyper controlled environments I’ve heard they can live for up to three months!
While I can certainly appreciate the theory of beginning the year with renewed determination, I favor a different approach to this concept in practice. It’s simple and rewarding and goes like this…
STEP #1: DEFINE THE CONCEPT get in touch with the core of it
Let’s look at the core of resolutions by doing one of my favorite things. Let’s look it up! Defining things is one of the quickest most helpful tools for increasing your awareness.
Resolution
• a firm decision to do or not to do something
• the quality of being determined or resolute
• the act of solving a problem, dispute or contentious matter [this one is interesting...]
• in music, the passing of a discord into a concord during the course of changing harmony
STEP #2 UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT get a new perspective on it
I think we can all find something we relate to here, especially “the act of solving a problem” cause we all seem to use New Years Resolutions to take a huge swing at the biggest ‘problems’ we face in life. The top three most popular resolutions are weight loss, enjoying life more, and giving up an addiction. These are all super challenging things, which most of us do not yet know how to fix, especially when we’ve lost our body-mind-spirit connection.
I think my favorite has to be the definition related to music. I like the idea of passing a discord into a concord during the coarse of a change, and the way it’s written implies a underlying harmony. It reminds me that the natural state of things is harmonious, so when we get in touch with ourselves, our core nature, things naturally harmonize.
STEP #3 BE REALISTIC WITH YOUR NATURE get your core
Guess what. You are with yourself all the time, so you know you better than you think! And guess what else. You’ll have another year after this one, and another, and another…. The point is, don’t make resolutions for this coming year exclusively, as if it’s the last year on earth! Make life long resolutions, from your core, based on who you enjoy being as a person.
Make these resolutions in a realistic way based on what you know about yourself, and how you accomplish things. And attach no pressure or expectations to your results, after all, you have a lifetime to achieve it all, right? But don’t let yourself off the hook completely either. You are awake after all, so with that consciousness comes an internal obligation to your spirit to do the right thing.
STEP #4 RESOLUTIONS FROM YOUR SPIRIT get core needs met
Right Now, grab your notebook! Make a list of what your spirit would like to have it’s New Years Resolutions be this year. What?! Haha…. Don’t think too much, just ask your spirit what it would like more of right now , or phrase it like this ” Spirit, what do you need immediately and urgently?” You may even choose to place your right hand over your heart as you ask the question.
What your spirit needs are what your New Years Resolutions should be!
My spirit said “to move my body for fun, savor pure foods, and share more love”.
So… My Spirit’s New Years Resolutions are:
To dance more [including taking taboo pole dancing classes which I long for ].
To enjoy a huge ripe juicy perfect peach once a week all summer long.
To have a fun night of pumpkin carving with someone I love in mid October.
To get cozy, safe, warm and happy couch time in with my man, at least 2x a week.
What ever it is that your spirit says it needs – turn it into something you know you can accomplish. If it’s love, find ways to be more loving to everyone you encounter each day. If it’s rest or enjoyment, put time aside every single day to simply do nothing, or to do something you especially enjoy. Even if only for 20 minutes. After all, when your spirit it taken care of, things like poor eating habits, a dull life and addictions all tend to loose their grip on us. With our spirit as the priority, we get a little better, year after year.
